Every specimen in the project, traceable both ways

Where it came from, and what came of it.

Register a sample by picking its kind, and it asks only for the fields that kind needs: passage number and mycoplasma status for a cell culture, biosafety level and an antibiotic resistance profile for a bacterial isolate, genotype and treatment group for a mouse. Everything saves as you type. Storage location points at a shelf, box, or freezer you set up in Facility, so where the tube actually sits travels with its record.

The workspace then holds the rest of the story: a bench log on cell cultures, a scored health timeline on organisms and plants, a well map on plates, and on all of them a connections map reaching the photos, image analysis, figures, protocol runs, and orders that sample touched.

Follow a sample back to its source and on to its results

The Connections tab maps everything joined to a sample: the one it came from, and the photos, image analysis, cytometry, FCS files, data tables, figures, protocol runs, notebook pages, inventory, orders, and tasks that came out of it. Chips above the map narrow it to one kind, and clicking a card redraws the map around that node. Set parent sample records where the material came from, and Link attaches anything else you can search for in the project.

Log the split, and the passage moves with it

Cell cultures carry a bench log. Log action records a feed, a split, an observation, a thaw, a freeze, a mycoplasma test, or a discard, and several of those keep the sample true as a by-product: a split moves the passage up one and clears the confluence, a definitive mycoplasma result writes the status, a discard marks it disposed. A contamination flag shows red on the log where the whole team sees it, and correcting an entry undoes what it wrote.

Take a plate from layout to readings on one map

Design paints roles, Prep sets concentrations, Transfer pulls wells from a parent plate, and Results takes the reader's file. The map colors by role during Design, by concentration during Prep, and as a heatmap of the readings during Results, so the same wells answer a different question at each step. A step shows as done from the plate's own data, and you can open any of them in any order.

Walk a dilution series across a row

Select a row, set the starting concentration, and give a fold factor. Each well takes the one before it divided by that factor, in reading order, and every well then shows what it holds. Below sits a dilution calculator as a scratch pad: give it a stock, a target, and a final volume and it says how much stock and how much diluent to combine, leaving the layout alone.

The sample record

  • Sixteen sample types

    Cell culture, tissue, slide, extract, fluid, organism, plant, insect, fungi, algae, microorganism, virus, microbiome, environmental, well plate, and general. Each one asks for the fields it needs and nothing else.

  • Parent samples and links

    Set parent sample records where material came from, and Link joins a sample to an analysis, a figure, a task, or a run. Naming a sub-sample asks which of the two came first.

  • Expiry, watched for you

    An Active or In Use sample flips to Expired once its date passes, on the save and on a nightly sweep. Expiring soon lists everything due in 30 days or already past, soonest first, across every folder.

  • Sample groups with roles

    A study, a cohort, or a control group, with each member carrying a role of Sample, Control, Calibration, or Blank. Run a protocol once against the whole group.

Finding and labeling

  • Group by and filter

    Reorganize the workspace by location, species, strain, type, status, health, growth stage, life stage, biosafety level, or the month a sample was created, and filter by those same dimensions plus starred and has-photos.

  • QR label sheets

    Avery 5160, Avery 5167, Avery L7160 for A4, or an 89 × 28 mm roll, with your own copy count and a starting position, so a part-used sheet still gets used.

  • Scan from a phone or a handheld

    Scanning works from any workspace, and a Scan ready chip says it is listening. Scan a fresh code and it offers to attach it to a sample or an item on the spot, which is how a box of pre-barcoded tubes gets adopted.

Well plates

  • Plate reader files and the standard curve

    Drop an .xlsx, .xls, or .csv onto Results and it finds the grid under the instrument's header rows. You see the well count and the skipped cells before applying, and two scored standards produce a curve.

  • Plate templates library

    Every layout the project has saved, at every plate size, searchable by name and drawn in miniature so you can tell two similar maps apart from the list.

  • Transfer between plates

    Pull wells from a parent plate of the same size, well for well or position to position, with a dilution factor as it comes across. The source is drained by exactly what you took.

Import, export, and bulk actions

  • CSV and TSV import

    Column headers match loosely, including the names other lab tools export, so a spreadsheet from elsewhere usually maps as it is. Name is the only required column.

  • QIIME2 metadata export

    A project holding microbiome samples exports the metadata .tsv a QIIME2 pipeline expects, built from the fields already on the samples.

  • Image analysis across a selection

    Pick several samples and run image analysis over every photo they hold in one pass, or run it once across a whole group.
