Why labs look for a Benchling alternative

Benchling is excellent at molecular biology and the notebook around it, and for a pure sequence lab that's often all you need. The gap shows up the moment the work isn't only sequences. Images, flow cytometry, and the figures that combine them live in other tools, so the notebook that's meant to tie an experiment together only holds part of it. Newer academic plans have also tightened what the free tier includes, and the commercial product is shaped for larger organizations.

Molecular biology, plus the imaging and flow it doesn't do

A figure you build pulls straight from that data rather than from exports you assembled by hand.

In practice that means less reconciling across platforms. You aren't matching a construct in one tool to a stain in another and a plot in a third, so there's less chance of a mislabeled sample or a figure built from a stale export.
